Chapter Nine

They went back to his room.

“I’m going to take my clothes off for this.”

“Stripping. Got it,” Alon said, feeling a little warm at the idea of watching her do that.

But shifters got naked in front of each other all the time. Not all shifters could keep their clothing intact through a change, and as a merman, for him, it was almost a non-issue. He could be wearing his favorite T-shirt, and whipping out his tail wouldn’t matter. Any mermaid could shift as well, provided she wore the right skirt or dress.

“You can turn around,” Darlena said, laughing a little and twirling her finger.

“Oh! Oh, right.”

“Is that a problem?” she asked, lips quirking.

Fuck, he felt like an idiot. Of course she wouldn’t want him watching her get undressed.

“No! Not at all. Of course you want me to turn around, which is fine. I will! But I kind of wanted to watch you shift.”

He spat out that last part without thinking and then felt like an even bigger jackass.

“You want to watch?”

“I don’t have to. That was stupid.”

“No, no, it’s okay. Just”—she bit her lip, looking a little shy, but then nodded—“hang on.”

She went into the bathroom. A moment later, she returned in a towel wrapped around her, her legs and shoulders bare and a smile on her face.

“Might burn the towel, but I think it’s fine.”

“They do have replacements,” Alon said, his throat suddenly so dry.

She was naked beneath that towel. He’d seen her once already with nothing on. As her flames had dimmed, he’d made out the physique of her body.

And he was starkly reminded of that now. The swell of her breasts, the dimples at her hips, and the smooth length of her thighs.

It was quiet for a while before something changed in the air.

Darlena cleared her throat. Alon scratched the back of his neck.

What the hell was happening?

“Okay, you ready?”

He nodded. “Absolutely.”

Darlena hesitated. She took a deep breath and shifted quickly, dropping the towel simultaneously, though her flames licked at it like candy waiting to be consumed.

Right before she was entirely up in flames, Alon got a good look at her fae form for a brief second. She was right there, in her naked glory, with horns, wings, and pointy ears, before the flames quickly licked her body and took over, lighting her up from head to toe.

Now, she stood in front of him like a phoenix. Like the Human Torch. Her body was entirely veiled with flickering, hungry fire, her eyes that bright shade of white that could light a dark room even without the rest of the fire. Was that her wings flicking behind her? If so, they were in flames as well.

But even though her feet were firmly on the carpeted floor, and she was standing two feet from the bed, nothing caught on fire. Her flames stayed firmly with her.

And Alon could only stare.

She was beautiful. It was by far the coolest thing he’d ever seen.

“That’s… amazing,” he said.

For a few seconds, he understood why moths were drawn to a flame.
